Flight Booking in Kenya: IATA-Accredited Ticketing Since 1994

From a single seat to Doha to a 40-person delegation flying four different routes, our consultants issue tickets directly on IATA authority, and stay reachable when the schedule falls apart at midnight.

Anyone who has tried to arrange a complicated trip alone knows the feeling. Twelve browser tabs open, three of them showing a fare that vanishes the moment you click through, one of them a comparison site that has quietly added a booking fee, and no phone number anywhere that connects to a human being. It works well enough when the trip is simple and nothing changes. It stops working the moment something does.

Flight booking in Kenya through an IATA-accredited agency is a fundamentally different arrangement. When Travelshoppe issues your ticket, we issue it on our own accreditation, the same ticketing authority the airline itself holds. That means we can reissue it, reroute it, revalidate it and, where the fare rules allow, refund it, without you sitting in a queue behind ten thousand other passengers. Since 1994 our consultants have been doing exactly this for Kenyan travellers, and today we handle air travel for more than 300 corporate clients alongside thousands of leisure and family bookings each year.

We are a member of the GlobalStar Travel Management network, which extends the same standard of support across 80+ countries. And when a flight goes wrong at two in the morning (which, sooner or later, one will) our 24/7 emergency line is answered by someone with the authority to fix it.

What IATA Accreditation Actually Means for Your Ticket

"IATA accredited" appears on a lot of Kenyan travel websites. Very few explain what it changes for the person holding the boarding pass. It is worth understanding, because it is the difference between an agency that can act on your ticket and one that can only pass your problem along.

BSP Settlement and Ticket Issuance Authority

IATA operates the Billing and Settlement Plan, the financial system through which accredited agents pay airlines. Accreditation requires audited accounts, a bank guarantee, qualified staff and continuous compliance review. Agencies that fail those checks lose the accreditation.

What it grants is the authority to issue live airline tickets. Your e-ticket is generated in the airline's own inventory, on airline stock, with a validating carrier code that ties it to a real seat. It is not a reservation held by a third party who then buys the ticket separately, a structure that has stranded travellers across Africa when the intermediary collapsed between booking and departure.

Direct Airline Relationships Built Over Three Decades

Accreditation opens the door. Three decades of trading volume through it is what builds the relationships. Our consultants deal with named account managers at the carriers operating from Nairobi, and those relationships matter most in the situations that fall outside standard policy: a waiver on a change fee after a bereavement, a seat released from a closed inventory class for a delegation that grew by two, a name correction processed after the normal deadline.

Our airline recognition, including a Turkish Airlines Best Corporate Award and an Etihad Airways Appreciation Award, reflects that trading history. It is not decoration. It is the reason a request from our office gets a different answer than the same request submitted through a web form.

The Authority to Reissue and Reroute

This is the practical core of it. Because we hold ticketing authority, our consultants can reissue a ticket onto a different flight, recalculate the fare difference, apply an airline waiver and reprocess the coupon while you are still standing at the counter. An agency without accreditation, or an online travel platform operating through a consolidator, has to escalate. Escalation takes hours. During a major disruption, it takes days.

What Our Consultants See in Amadeus That a Booking Site Never Shows You

We book through Amadeus, one of the global distribution systems that airlines feed their live inventory into. A consumer booking site draws on the same underlying data but presents a simplified slice of it, filtered for speed of purchase rather than completeness.

Alternative Routings and Real-Time Availability

Searching Nairobi to Lisbon on a consumer site returns what its algorithm decides to show. A consultant can hold six routings side by side, via Doha, via Istanbul, via Addis Ababa, via Dubai, via Amsterdam, via a Nairobi–Paris partner interline, and compare not just price but connection time, terminal changes, baggage rules through the interline, and which carrier is likeliest to rebook you fastest if the first leg slips. That last consideration has no field on a booking website.

Seats, Baggage Allowances and Special Service Requests

Pre-assigned seating on the row you asked for. Confirmed extra baggage loaded onto the PNR rather than paid at a check-in desk at four times the price. Wheelchair assistance, unaccompanied minor handling, dietary meal codes, infant bassinets on long-haul, and sports or medical equipment declared in advance. Each of these is a coded entry against your booking that we confirm before you travel, not a hopeful request at the airport.

Corporate Flight Booking for Nairobi Businesses

Air travel is usually the single largest line in a company's travel budget and the one with the least visibility. Our corporate flight desk exists to change both figures. This section sits alongside our full corporate travel management offering, which covers policy, approvals, duty of care and reporting end to end.

How Negotiated Corporate Fares Are Actually Secured

Airline corporate fare agreements are volume instruments. A carrier offers a discount off published fares on nominated routes in exchange for a committed share of an account's traffic on those routes. The discount is typically banded, a deeper reduction as the volume commitment rises, and reviewed annually against actual performance.

An individual company negotiating alone brings only its own volume to the table, which on most routes is not enough to open a meaningful band. What we bring is aggregated: three decades of continuous trading and the combined air spend of more than 300 corporate accounts across our portfolio. That aggregate is what unlocks fare access, and it is why a mid-sized Nairobi firm booking through us can reach corporate pricing it could not negotiate on its own.

Where a client already has direct airline agreements, we load and apply them alongside ours, and book whichever is cheaper on the day.

Policy Compliance and Approval Workflows

We load your travel policy into the booking process itself: cabin class thresholds by grade or flight duration, advance-purchase windows, preferred carriers, maximum fare ceilings by route. Bookings that comply are processed straight through. Bookings that breach are flagged with the reason and routed to your named approver before ticketing. Finance stops discovering policy breaches in the month-end reconciliation.

Air Spend Reporting for Finance Teams

Every corporate account receives structured air travel reporting: spend by department, cost centre, traveller, route and carrier; advance booking lead times; policy compliance rates; and savings realised against published fares. Most finance directors find the lead-time data the most immediately actionable: on the Nairobi–London and Nairobi–Dubai corridors, moving average booking from seven days out to twenty-one typically shifts fares by a full band.

The GlobalStar Advantage across 80+ countries

For companies with offices or projects outside Kenya, GlobalStar membership means your travellers are supported by an accredited local partner wherever they are, working to the same policy and reporting into the same consolidated account. A team member ticketed in Nairobi and rerouted in Sao Paulo is handled by a GlobalStar member in Brazil, with the change reflected in your Kenyan reporting. Our full network detail is set out on our partners and affiliations page.

Leisure and Family Flight Booking from Nairobi

Corporate discipline applied to a family holiday produces a noticeably better trip. The same consultants handle both, and the tools are identical. Our dedicated leisure travel team works alongside this flight desk, and can pair your ticket with hotel reservations when you need the whole trip organised in one place.

What "Cheap Flights from Nairobi" Really Depends On

Fare is a function of four things: how far ahead you book, when you fly, how you route, and which fare class the seat is sold in. Kenyan demand peaks hard in December, in August, and around Easter, school holidays and festive travel compress the same routes at the same time each year. February and early March, and again late April into May, are consistently the softest windows out of Nairobi.

Availability varies by travel dates, route and fare class. Our consultants check live airline inventory and explain the applicable rules before ticketing.

Multi-City Routings and Free Stopovers

Several carriers serving Nairobi permit a stopover in their hub at little or no fare penalty, and a few actively subsidise it with a hotel night. Two days in Istanbul on the way to Europe, or a Doha stopover en route to Asia, costs less than most travellers assume and turns a connection into part of the holiday. Ask us to price it: it is rarely visible on a consumer search. If the stopover requires its own visa or transit permit, our visa assistance team checks the requirement before you commit to the routing.

Infants, Children, Extra Baggage and Sports Equipment

Infant fares, child discounts, bassinet allocation and connecting-flight seating for families travelling together all need to be built into the booking rather than fixed afterwards. The same goes for golf bags, dive gear, bicycles and musical instruments, which are cheaper and far less stressful when declared and paid in advance.

Airlines and Routes We Book from JKIA

Nairobi is one of Africa's best-connected departure points, and the choice of carrier shapes far more than the fare. Connection time, baggage policy, terminal layout and, critically, how quickly a carrier rebooks you when a leg is lost all vary widely.

CarrierHubTypical connectionStrongest onward network
Kenya AirwaysNairobi (NBO)Direct on most African and several long-haul routesAfrica, plus direct long-haul to Europe and Asia
EmiratesDubai (DXB)2 to 4 hoursAsia, Middle East, Australia, Indian subcontinent
Qatar AirwaysDoha (DOH)2 to 4 hoursEurope, Asia, extensive one-stop coverage
Turkish AirlinesIstanbul (IST)2 to 6 hoursEurope, Balkans, Central Asia, North America
Ethiopian AirlinesAddis Ababa (ADD)1.5 to 4 hoursAfrica, Asia, North America
flydubaiDubai (DXB)Connects to Emirates networkUAE, Gulf, regional Middle East

Kenya Airways direct services carry an advantage worth weighing against a cheaper one-stop: no connection to miss, and no second baggage handling. On a tight schedule that reliability is often worth the fare difference.

Between them, these carriers and their hubs also put popular leisure destinations within easy reach of Nairobi travellers: Dubai direct on Emirates or flydubai, the Indian subcontinent beyond the Emirates and Qatar hubs, mainland Europe via Istanbul or Doha, and, on a shorter regional hop, Zanzibar.

Domestic and regional flying largely operates from Wilson Airport rather than JKIA, particularly light-aircraft services into the safari circuit. Where a trip combines an international arrival at JKIA with an onward flight from Wilson, we build the inter-airport transfer time into the itinerary rather than leaving it to chance, see our Kenya safari tours planning for how those connections are sequenced.

When Things Go Wrong: The Real Value of a Flight Agent

Everything above matters at the margin. This section is where an agent earns their place outright.

Schedule Changes and Involuntary Rerouting

Airlines adjust schedules constantly, and the notification frequently goes to an email address the traveller no longer checks. We monitor schedule changes on every ticket we hold. When a change breaks a connection or shifts a departure beyond what your trip can absorb, we contact you and present the rebooking options, usually before you have noticed.

When the airline causes the disruption, you are entitled to involuntary rerouting at no fare cost, including, in many cases, onto a different carrier. Passengers routinely accept a poor alternative because they do not know what they are owed. We do.

Missed Connections and Same-Day Recovery

A missed connection is a race. The seats on the next viable service are finite and go to whoever is rebooked first. A consultant working live in Amadeus can see what is open across every carrier and secure it in minutes, while the queue at the transfer desk is still forming. This single capability recovers more trips for our clients than any other thing we do. For costs an airline will not cover after a disruption, such as an extra night's accommodation or a missed prepaid activity, a travel insurance policy arranged before departure can make the difference.

Emergency Ticketing on Our 24/7 Line

Disruption does not respect office hours. Our emergency line, +254 700 372 398, is staffed around the clock and answered by a consultant with live ticketing authority, not a message service. Stranded in transit, denied boarding, or needing a same-night reroute after a cancellation: that number resolves it.

Group and Block Flight Bookings

Ten or more passengers travelling together on the same route is a group booking, and it operates under different commercial rules from ten individual tickets.

Group fares also generally allow a percentage of free name changes up to the ticketing deadline, and on some routes a complimentary place for the tour leader once the party passes a threshold. We handle conference delegations, church and school parties, wedding groups, sports teams and incentive travel this way. Group air pairs naturally with our group travel arrangements and, for corporate events, with MICE and events logistics.

Fare Classes, Change Fees and Baggage: Explained Plainly

The lowest classes are the cheapest and the most restricted: no changes, no refund of the base fare, no upgrade eligibility, minimal or no mileage accrual. Mid classes permit changes for a fee plus any fare difference. The highest economy classes are fully flexible and often fully refundable. This applies just as much to luxury travel bookings in premium cabins as it does to economy tickets.

Two things travellers consistently misunderstand:

"Non-refundable" rarely means "worth nothing." Government taxes and airport charges are usually recoverable on an unused ticket, and many fares retain residual value against future travel with the same carrier within twelve months.

A change fee is not the whole cost of changing. You pay the fee plus the difference between your original fare class and the lowest class available on the new date. If your original class has sold out, that difference can exceed the fee several times over. We always quote both figures before you authorise a change.

How to Book and How to Pay

Reach us by WhatsApp on +254 757 188 757, by phone on +254 20 5148700, by email at info@travelshoppe.co.ke, or in person at our Westlands office. Our Nanyuki branch serves clients across Laikipia and the Mount Kenya region on +254 714 445 081.

We hold a quoted fare for as long as the airline's fare rules permit, sometimes several days, sometimes only until midnight, and we tell you which applies before you decide.

  • M-Pesa. For individual and family bookings, the fastest route from confirmation to issued ticket. Send payment, we issue, your e-ticket arrives by email and WhatsApp, usually within the hour during office hours.
  • Corporate invoice account. Approved corporate clients book against an account and settle on agreed terms, with air spend consolidated into monthly reporting. No card at point of booking.
  • Card. Visa and Mastercard.
  • Bank transfer. For larger group bookings and deposits.

For groups, we structure a deposit-and-balance schedule against the airline's ticketing deadline so that neither the seats nor your cash flow are put at risk.

What Affects Your Final Fare

Four levers, in rough order of impact:

  • Booking window. On most long-haul routes from Nairobi, three to six weeks ahead is the sweet spot for economy. Inside fourteen days, availability in the lower classes has usually gone. Beyond about five months, carriers often have not yet released their cheapest inventory.
  • Season. December, August and Easter carry the year's highest fares out of Kenya. Shifting departure by even a week either side of a school-holiday boundary can move the fare a full band.
  • Routing. A one-stop itinerary is almost always cheaper than a direct service. Whether the saving justifies the added hours depends entirely on the trip.
  • Fare class. Flexibility costs money. Restriction saves it. Choose deliberately.

On our service fee: we charge a transparent ticketing fee on leisure bookings, disclosed in the quotation before you commit, and it is generally far smaller than the fare and rule advantages that come with it. Corporate accounts operate on an agreed fee structure set out in the service agreement. We do not bury charges in the fare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to book flights through a travel agent or online?

On a simple, well-advertised route with no complications, an online fare and ours will usually land close together. The difference appears elsewhere: on corporate routes where our negotiated fares beat public pricing, on complex or multi-city routings where a better construction exists, and on any trip that changes, where the cost of an unsupported change frequently exceeds any initial saving.

What does IATA accreditation mean for me as a passenger?

Your ticket is issued directly into airline inventory on our own ticketing authority. We can reissue, reroute, revalidate and file refunds on it ourselves, rather than escalating to a third party. It also means we are financially audited and bank-guaranteed under the IATA Billing and Settlement Plan.

Can you book a flight I've found cheaper elsewhere?

Send it to us. Sometimes we can match or better it. Sometimes we will show you why the cheaper fare is structured in a way you will regret: a 55-minute connection at a hub where that is not realistic, or a fare class with no change rights on a trip with unsettled dates. We will tell you honestly either way.

Can I pay for flights with M-Pesa?

Yes. M-Pesa is our most-used payment method for individual and family flight bookings. Once payment reflects, we issue the ticket and send your e-ticket by email and WhatsApp, normally within the hour during office hours.

What happens if my flight is cancelled or rescheduled?

Contact us: during office hours on +254 20 5148700 or WhatsApp, and at any other time on our 24/7 emergency line +254 700 372 398. We rebook you directly in the airline's system. Where the airline caused the disruption you are generally entitled to rerouting at no additional fare cost, and we secure that on your behalf.

How far in advance should I book international flights from Nairobi?

Three to six weeks ahead for most economy long-haul. For December, August and Easter travel, book two to three months out: those windows sell into higher fare classes early and stay there.

Do you charge a service fee for flight booking?

Yes, on leisure bookings, and we disclose it in the quotation before you commit. Corporate clients operate on an agreed fee structure within their service agreement.

Can you book flights for a group of 15 travelling together?

Yes. Fifteen passengers qualifies for group fare negotiation on most carriers. You secure the seats with a per-passenger deposit, supply full names later, and pay the balance at the ticketing deadline. Group fares are typically protected against fare increases after deposit.

Can you help if I'm stranded abroad after hours?

That is exactly what the 24/7 line is for. +254 700 372 398 is answered by a consultant with live ticketing authority who can rebook you immediately. For clients travelling in GlobalStar network countries, we can also engage the local partner on the ground.

Send Us Your Dates. We Will Do the Rest.

Whether it is one seat to Kigali next Tuesday or a fifty-person delegation moving across three continents, the value of flight booking in Kenya through an accredited agency is the same: a ticket issued properly, rules explained before you pay, and a consultant who answers when the plan changes. Thirty years of doing this from Nairobi is why our corporate clients stay, and why families come back each December.
