Airport Transfers Nairobi and KARIBU Meet & Assist at JKIA
The first twenty minutes on the ground set the tone for everything that follows. We make sure someone is waiting, knows your name, and knows exactly where you are going.
Airport transfers in Nairobi are the part of a trip nobody plans and everybody remembers.
You have flown eight hours. You land at 04:40. Immigration is a queue that does not appear to be moving, one of your bags is last onto the belt, and by the time you reach the arrivals hall it is nearly six in the morning and you are looking at a wall of forty people holding forty signs, none of which say your name.
Or the version we prefer: you step off the aerobridge and a representative is standing there with your name, takes your passport details through immigration, waits with you at the belt, walks you past the crowd, and hands you into a vehicle whose driver already knows the hotel, the route and the fact that your first meeting is at nine.
That second version is our KARIBU service, and it is the reason this page leads with it rather than with a price list. We have been meeting people at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport since 1994, 30+ years of arrivals, at every hour, in every condition, for executives, families, delegations, unaccompanied children and elderly travellers who genuinely should not be navigating an airport alone.
Karibu is Kiswahili for "welcome." We named the service after it deliberately.
Arriving Soon? Send Us Your Flight Number.
That is all we need to start. We will confirm your transfer and send you your driver's name, photograph, phone number and vehicle registration before you board.
KARIBU, Our Meet & Assist Service at JKIA
KARIBU is our named meet-and-assist product at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and it is a genuinely different thing from a transfer. A transfer is a vehicle and a driver. KARIBU is a person who meets you inside the terminal and stays with you until you are seated in that vehicle.
What KARIBU Includes on Arrival
Airside meet. Where airport authorisation permits, our representative meets you as you come off the aircraft, before immigration, not after. This is the part that matters most, because everything difficult about an arrival happens between the aerobridge and the arrivals hall.
Immigration assistance. Our representative guides you to the correct queue, ensures your eTA or visa documentation is in order before you reach the desk, and resolves questions in Kiswahili with officials directly. Where fast-track processing is available and has been arranged in advance, we use it.
Baggage. We wait with you at the carousel, coordinate porters, and handle the customs channel. If a bag does not arrive, our representative files the property irregularity report with the airline on your behalf while you sit down, rather than you standing at a desk at five in the morning after a long flight.
Escort to the vehicle. Through the arrivals hall, past the crowd and the taxi touts, directly to your driver at a pre-agreed point. Your representative introduces you to the driver by name and confirms your destination out loud so there is no ambiguity.
Onward coordination. If you are connecting, to a domestic flight from the same terminal, to Wilson Airport across the city, or to a hotel with a late check-in, the representative confirms the arrangement is live before leaving you.
KARIBU on Departure
The service works in reverse and is under-requested, which is a shame because departures from JKIA at peak hours reward having help.
Our representative meets you at the terminal entrance, assists with check-in and baggage drop, guides you through security and immigration, and, where lounge access is part of your arrangement, escorts you to it. For clients travelling with excess baggage, complicated equipment, or on tight connections, this removes the entire stress of a departure.
What KARIBU Cannot Do, Being Clear About the Limits
We would rather set the expectation properly than have you discover it at the desk.
KARIBU does not bypass immigration. Our representative can guide, translate, prepare your documents and ensure you are in the right queue, they cannot process you faster than the authorities process you, and they cannot resolve a genuine documentation problem such as an expired passport or a missing eTA. Prevention is the answer there, which is why we check documentation before departure through our visa application assistance service.
Airside access depends on airport authorisation and is not guaranteed on every flight or at every hour. Where it is not available, our representative meets you immediately after immigration in the baggage hall or at the arrivals exit, and we tell you in advance which it will be.
Fast-track immigration processing, where offered, is subject to availability and must be arranged well ahead. We do not sell it as standard and we will not promise it on short notice.

Who KARIBU Is For
The most common use. A director lands at 06:00 with a 09:00 board meeting. The difference between a smooth arrival and a chaotic one is whether they walk into that meeting prepared or flustered. Existing corporate travel management clients add KARIBU to any inbound booking as a standing instruction.
Anyone arriving in a country for the first time, particularly on a long-haul overnight, benefits disproportionately. It also removes the single most common first-time-visitor problem: being approached in the arrivals hall by unlicensed operators offering transport.
Wheelchair coordination, slow walking pace, mobility support through a very large terminal, and a person who stays with them throughout. Families booking travel for elderly parents are among our most consistent KARIBU clients, and we understand exactly why.
Handled with particular care and full documentation. We coordinate directly with the airline's unaccompanied minor procedure, our representative meets the child through the airline handover process, and we do not release a minor to anyone whose identity is not verified against the documentation provided at booking. Parents receive confirmation by phone or WhatsApp at handover.
Government delegations, conference keynote speakers, senior visiting executives. Multiple representatives, multiple vehicles, coordinated departure from the terminal, and a single point of contact managing the whole movement.
Where thirty or eighty delegates arrive on one flight for a single event, KARIBU becomes a marshalling operation: representatives collecting delegates as they clear, grouping them at a holding point, and dispatching vehicles in waves rather than leaving eighty people to find eighty drivers. We run this jointly with our MICE and events team and for group bookings.
Meeting Someone Important? Let Us Meet Them Properly.
KARIBU meet and assist can be added to any arrival or departure at JKIA, for one executive, an elderly parent, a child travelling alone, or a delegation of eighty. Tell us who is arriving and when.
Pay by M-Pesa, card, bank transfer or corporate account with monthly invoicing.
The Three Airports Kenyan Travellers Use
Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA / NBO), International Arrivals and Departures
Kenya's principal international gateway and one of Africa's busiest, roughly 18 kilometres southeast of the Nairobi central business district on Mombasa Road.
Journey times from JKIA, and they vary enormously by time of day:
| Destination | Off-peak | Peak (07:00 to 09:30, 16:30 to 19:30) |
|---|---|---|
| CBD / Upper Hill | 30 to 40 min | 60 to 90 min |
| Westlands | 40 to 50 min | 75 to 110 min |
| Karen / Langata | 45 to 55 min | 80 to 120 min |
| Gigiri / UN complex | 50 to 60 min | 90 to 130 min |
Terminal layout. JKIA operates several terminals; international arrivals predominantly use Terminal 1A, with 1C and other terminals handling additional international and regional traffic. Terminal allocation is airline-specific and does change. We confirm your terminal against your specific flight rather than assuming, and your driver is briefed to the terminal, not just to the airport.
The Nairobi Expressway has materially changed the journey. It runs from Mlolongo past JKIA to Westlands and bypasses the worst of Mombasa Road. For a peak-hour arrival with a meeting to reach, we may use it. In genuinely free-flowing off-peak conditions the surface road is fine and we take it.
Wilson Airport (WIL), Domestic and Safari Charter
Roughly 6 kilometres south of the CBD on Langata Road, Wilson is the hub for scheduled light aircraft and charter flights to the safari airstrips, the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Lamu, Laikipia and the northern circuits.
If your itinerary includes a fly-in safari, you will use Wilson, and almost certainly on the day after you arrive at JKIA, or, uncomfortably often, on the same morning.
Journey times to Wilson: CBD 15 to 30 minutes off-peak; Westlands 25 to 45 minutes; Karen 20 to 35 minutes. All of these roughly double at peak.
Wilson is a small, informal airport with several separate operator terminals rather than one consolidated building. Knowing which operator's building you need is not obvious to a first-time visitor. Our drivers deliver to the correct operator terminal, not to the main gate.

Moi International, Mombasa (MBA), Coast Arrivals
Kenya's second international airport, about 10 kilometres from Mombasa city centre, serving both international arrivals and domestic flights from Nairobi.
Journey times from MBA: Nyali 30 to 45 minutes; Mombasa city centre 20 to 30 minutes; Diani Beach 60 to 90 minutes including the Likoni crossing.
The Likoni ferry is the specific coastal variable. Diani and the entire south coast are reached via the Likoni channel crossing, and queue times vary from a few minutes to well over an hour depending on the time of day and the season. For clients with a fixed onward connection we route via Ukunda airstrip instead, or we build in generous margin and tell you why. Full destination detail on our Mombasa and Diani Beach pages.

The JKIA-to-Wilson Connection, Plan This Properly
This is the single most under-appreciated logistical problem in Kenyan travel, and it catches out experienced travellers as reliably as first-timers.
The situation: you land at JKIA on a long-haul flight and you have a light aircraft departing Wilson for the Masai Mara. These are two different airports on opposite sides of a large city, and there is no airside connection, no shuttle, and no way to shortcut the drive. You must clear immigration and customs, collect your bags, exit the terminal, and cross Nairobi by road.
Realistic JKIA to Wilson transfer times:
| Time of day | Transfer time |
|---|---|
| Before 06:30 | 25 to 35 minutes |
| 07:00 to 09:30 (peak) | 60 to 100 minutes |
| Mid-morning / midday | 35 to 50 minutes |
| 16:30 to 19:30 (peak) | 70 to 110 minutes |
| After 20:00 | 25 to 35 minutes |
The minimum connection window we recommend is three hours from scheduled landing to scheduled Wilson departure, and four hours if you are arriving during a peak window or on a flight with a history of delays. That may sound generous. It accounts for immigration queues at a busy arrival bank, baggage delivery, the cross-city drive, and check-in at the light aircraft operator, which closes earlier than people expect relative to departure.
Where people get caught. Booking a 10:00 Wilson departure against an 08:00 JKIA arrival. On paper, two hours. In practice: aircraft on stand at 08:15, immigration until 09:00 on a busy morning, bags at 09:20, out of the terminal at 09:30, into the worst of the morning peak on Mombasa Road, and Wilson check-in has closed before you reach Langata Road.
What we do when the inbound is late. We monitor the arriving flight. If it is delayed to the point where the Wilson connection is at risk, we act before you land: we contact the light aircraft operator directly, establish whether they can hold or whether there is a later departure, and we have an answer ready when you switch your phone on. Several of the scheduled Mara operators run multiple daily departures, so a missed morning flight is frequently a rebooking rather than a lost day, but only if someone starts working on it before you land.
Our standing advice. Where the itinerary allows it, overnight in Nairobi between the international arrival and the safari flight. It converts a stressful morning into a comfortable one, and it means you begin your safari having slept. We build itineraries this way by default and we will say so when a client asks us to compress it. Our hotel reservations team holds negotiated rates at properties close to both airports, and a night in Nairobi is also a chance to see the city, see Nairobi tours and day trips for what fits into a half day.

Flight Monitoring and Delayed Arrivals
We track the flight, not the clock. Every transfer booking is linked to the actual flight and monitored against live status. If your aircraft is two hours late, the driver's dispatch time moves by two hours. You do not need to call us from the air, and you will not land to find that your driver waited an hour and left.
Our waiting time policy. For international arrivals we include a generous complimentary waiting period after the actual landing time, not the scheduled time, to cover immigration and baggage. Charging punitively for a delay caused by an airline or an immigration queue is an unpleasant practice and we do not follow it. Where waiting extends well beyond the norm because of an exceptional situation, we will talk to you about it rather than adding a line to an invoice you see later.
Diverted flights. JKIA occasionally diverts inbound aircraft to Mombasa in weather or operational disruption. If that happens, we do not simply cancel your transfer. Our operations team contacts you, establishes whether the airline is re-routing you to Nairobi or accommodating you in Mombasa, and repositions accordingly, including arranging a Mombasa transfer or a Nairobi pickup on the eventual arrival.
Missed connections after midnight. Our 24/7 emergency line on +254 700 372 398 is answered by a person, not a recording, at every hour of the night. If you land at 01:30 and everything has gone wrong, that number reaches someone who can act. This is not a marketing claim we make lightly, it is the line our corporate and NGO clients test most often, and it is the reason several of them are still with us decades later.
Cancellation. If your flight is cancelled entirely and you do not travel, we do not charge for the transfer. Tell us when you know.
Late-Night and Early-Morning Arrivals
A large share of long-haul flights into JKIA land between midnight and dawn. It is worth thinking about this properly before you arrive.
Everything is quieter, including the roads. A 03:00 arrival has the fastest transfer times of the day, twenty-five minutes to Westlands is realistic. The difficulty is not traffic.
Hotel check-in is the difficulty. A guaranteed late arrival must be flagged to the hotel or the room may be released. We do this as standard on every booking that includes accommodation, and we confirm it in writing. If your arrival falls hours before standard check-in and you want a room immediately rather than at two in the afternoon, that requires booking the previous night, we will tell you that at the quote stage rather than letting you find out at the desk.
Safety protocol for night arrivals. We take this seriously, particularly for solo travellers and for women travelling alone. Your driver's name, photograph, phone number and vehicle registration are sent to you before you travel. The driver waits at a specified point inside the arrivals area holding a name board, not in a car park. We ask you to confirm the driver's name against your message before entering the vehicle, and we do not consider that excessive caution, it is simply how it should be done.
Under no circumstances should an arriving visitor accept transport from someone who approaches them in the arrivals hall. If your driver is not where expected, call the 24/7 number and stay inside the terminal. We will find you.
KARIBU is worth more at 3am than at any other hour. If you are meeting an elderly relative, a child, or a first-time visitor off a night flight, this is the arrival to book it for.
The Arrival Experience
Before you fly, you receive a confirmation containing: your driver's full name and photograph, their mobile number, the vehicle make, colour and registration, the exact meeting point at your terminal, and our 24/7 line. Save it to your phone, because you may land without working data.
Meet-and-greet signage. Your driver or KARIBU representative holds a printed board. We print your name as you gave it to us, and if you would prefer your company name or a discreet reference rather than your own name, which some corporate and VIP clients do prefer, tell us and we will use that instead.
Where your driver stands. We specify the exact position at your terminal in your confirmation, because "arrivals at JKIA" covers a great deal of ground across multiple terminals. Your driver is at the point named in the message and stays there.
On landing. Send us a WhatsApp on +254 757 188 757 when you switch your phone on. Our operations desk sees it and confirms your driver's position immediately. If you have no data, airport wifi will carry a WhatsApp message.
Porters and baggage. On KARIBU bookings our representative coordinates porters directly. On standard transfers your driver assists with loading at the vehicle. Porter tipping inside the terminal is customary and discretionary; we will tell you what is normal if you ask, rather than leaving you guessing.
Vehicle Standards and Driver Vetting
The fleet. Saloons for one or two passengers with light baggage, SUVs for families and for passengers with substantial luggage, minivans for groups of up to nine, minibuses and coaches for delegations, and executive vehicles for senior arrivals. Every vehicle is licensed for public service where required, insured, regularly serviced, air-conditioned and clean. Bottled water is provided as standard, and we can supply a phone charger on request.
Vehicle detail, categories and longer-term hire arrangements are covered on our car hire page.
Driver vetting. Every driver holds a valid licence with the appropriate endorsement, a certificate of good conduct, and a verified employment history. They are trained in defensive driving and briefed on airport procedure at all three airports. Our drivers do not solicit at terminals, do not divert to shops or "recommended" outlets, and do not renegotiate a rate mid-journey. If any of that ever happens, tell us and we will deal with it.
Presentation. For corporate and executive transfers our drivers are in business attire and are briefed on the client's schedule before dispatch. A driver who knows that your next stop is a meeting behaves differently from one who does not.
Languages. All drivers speak English and Kiswahili. French, German, Italian and Spanish-speaking drivers are available with advance notice, subject to availability during peak season.

Corporate Accounts and Monthly Billing
For organisations with regular inbound visitors, booking transfers one at a time is administrative waste.
Standing arrangements. We hold your company's transfer requirements on file, preferred vehicle class, standard destinations, whether KARIBU is default for visiting directors, which cost centre each booking is charged to. Your travel coordinator sends a flight number and we do the rest.
Consolidated monthly invoicing. One invoice per month covering every transfer, itemised by traveller, date, route, vehicle and cost centre. No individual receipts to reconcile and no drivers being paid in cash by visiting staff.
Reporting. Transfer activity by department, cost centre or project code, supplied in the same reporting cycle as the rest of your travel programme under our corporate travel management service.
Event and delegation management. For conferences and corporate events we manage the whole arrival and departure movement: manifest by flight, representatives deployed to match arrival banks, vehicles dispatched in waves, and a single named coordinator you can call. Run jointly with our MICE team.
Payment. Corporate accounts on agreed credit terms. Individual bookings by M-Pesa, Visa, Mastercard or bank transfer.
Booking and Payment
We confirm the vehicle, driver and journey arrangements before travel. M-Pesa, Visa and Mastercard, bank transfer, or corporate account are accepted. For onward travel from the airport, see our flight booking service; for premium arrival handling, our luxury travel service covers the full VIP arrangement. Travellers arriving for a fly-in safari should also read our Masai Mara destination guide for airstrip and flight timing detail, and leisure travel for full holiday planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the KARIBU meet and assist service?
KARIBU is our named airport assistance product at JKIA. A representative meets you inside the terminal, airside where authorisation permits, guides you through immigration, waits with you for your baggage, handles the customs channel, and escorts you directly to your driver. It also works in reverse for departures. It is separate from, and added to, a standard transfer.
Can you meet me before immigration at JKIA?
Where airport authorisation permits on your specific flight, yes, that airside meet is the core of the KARIBU service. Access is not guaranteed on every flight or at every hour. Where it is not available we meet you immediately after immigration in the baggage hall, and we tell you in advance which it will be.
How much time should I allow between JKIA and Wilson Airport?
Three hours minimum from scheduled landing to scheduled Wilson departure, and four if you are arriving in a peak window. That covers immigration, baggage, the cross-city drive and light aircraft check-in, which closes earlier than most people expect. Where the itinerary permits, we recommend overnighting in Nairobi instead.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing you need to do. We monitor the flight and move the driver's dispatch time to match the actual arrival. Complimentary waiting time runs from when you actually land, not from the scheduled time. If a delay puts an onward connection at risk, we start working on alternatives before you land.
How will I find my driver at JKIA?
You receive your driver's name, photograph, mobile number and vehicle registration before you fly, along with the exact meeting point at your terminal. Your driver holds a printed name board at that point. Message us on WhatsApp when you land and our operations desk will confirm their position immediately.
Do you handle 3am arrivals?
Yes, at every hour. Night arrivals actually have the fastest transfer times of the day. We flag guaranteed late arrivals to your hotel so the room is not released, and we send your driver's full details in advance so you can verify them before getting into the vehicle.
Can you assist an unaccompanied minor or an elderly traveller?
Yes, and these are among the arrivals we handle most carefully. For unaccompanied minors we coordinate with the airline's formal handover procedure and release the child only to a person verified against the documentation given at booking, with confirmation to the parent at handover. For elderly and mobility-assisted passengers we arrange wheelchair support and a representative who stays with them throughout.
Do you cover Mombasa and Diani transfers?
Yes, Moi International Airport to Mombasa, Nyali, the north coast and Diani. Note that Diani is reached via the Likoni channel crossing, where queue times vary considerably, so we either build in generous margin or route via Ukunda airstrip for clients with a fixed onward connection.
Can my company be billed monthly for transfers?
Yes. We hold your requirements on file, your coordinator sends us a flight number, and we invoice once a month itemised by traveller, date, route and cost centre. No cash changing hands with drivers and no individual receipts to reconcile. This runs alongside the rest of your travel programme on the same account.
Karibu, Welcome to Kenya. Let Us Meet You Properly.
The quality of airport transfers in Nairobi is not really about the vehicle. It is about whether somebody is genuinely expecting you: whether they know your flight is late before you do, whether they know which terminal, whether they know your connection to Wilson is tight and have already called the operator.
That is what thirty years of meeting people at JKIA buys. We have been doing this since 1994 as an IATA-accredited agency and Kenya's exclusive GlobalStar Travel Management partner, with a 24/7 line answered by a real person at every hour of the night.
Send us your flight number. Everything else is our job.
