Travel Destinations from Kenya: Where Our Travellers Go
Thirty-plus destination guides written by consultants who have been there, covering flight times from JKIA, visa positions for the Kenyan passport, honest seasonal advice and real budget ranges in shillings and dollars.
Everywhere on this page is reachable from Nairobi. The question is which one fits the time you have.
Most people arrive at this page with the trip already half-decided in their head. They know roughly when they can travel, roughly what they can spend, and they have one or two places in mind that a friend mentioned. What they usually do not have is a clear sense of whether those places actually fit the days they can take off, or whether the visa will be ready in time.
That is the gap this page exists to close. We have grouped every one of our travel destinations from Kenya below, with enough detail on each to tell you whether it belongs on your shortlist, and a link through to the full guide when it does.
We have been arranging travel out of Nairobi since 1994. Our consultants have inspected properties in most of the places listed here, and where we have not been personally, we say so on the destination page rather than writing around it. Thirty-two years of sending people to these destinations has taught us that the trips that go wrong are almost never the ones that went wrong on the ground. They are the ones that were badly matched to the traveller before anybody left home.
Not Sure Where to Start? Start with a Conversation.
Tell us your dates, your budget and who is travelling. We will narrow thirty destinations down to three that actually fit, in about fifteen minutes, at no cost.
How to Choose a Destination from Nairobi
There are only four constraints that genuinely decide a trip. Everything else is preference, and preference is easy to work around once these four are settled.
The Days You Can Actually Take
Not the days you have in your leave balance, the days you can realistically be away. This is the constraint people underestimate most badly.
A long weekend genuinely works for Zanzibar, Kigali, the Mara, Amboseli, Naivasha and Nanyuki. Four days is enough. Anything requiring a connection through the Gulf does not work on a long weekend, no matter how attractive the fare looks, because you will spend two of those four days in transit and arrive home more tired than when you left.
Seven to nine days is the sweet spot for the Indian Ocean islands, Dubai, Egypt, South Africa and a single-country European trip. Twelve days and upward is where multi-country Europe, Southeast Asia, Borneo and the more ambitious safari-plus-beach combinations start to make sense.
The Visa Lead Time
This one has ended more trips than money has. Somebody books a flight to Amsterdam six weeks out, then finds the nearest Schengen appointment in Nairobi is eleven weeks away. The flight is now a sunk cost.
Work backwards from the visa, not forwards from the flight. Entry requirements, application channels and appointment availability are set by the destination authorities and can change without notice. Check the relevant official immigration or embassy source before making a non-refundable booking. For the fuller walkthrough of the process itself, see our complete guide to visa requirements for Kenyans.
Further down this page, our flight times and visa position section points you to where to check the current requirements for every destination we cover. Our visa application assistance team confirms the live position on every application we handle, and that check costs nothing.
The Real Budget, Not the Flight Price
Every destination guide on this site carries indicative budget ranges in both KES and USD, split by travel style, so you can see the full picture before committing. Where a destination has a hidden cost that catches Kenyan travellers out, such as resort transfers, park fees paid in dollars, or tourist taxes collected on arrival, we name it.
Our Kenya safari cost guide breaks down typical price ranges by safari style, if you want more detail before you start comparing destinations.
The Season You Are Travelling In
Season affects price far more than most travellers expect, and it affects experience more than that. The Mara in April costs a fraction of the Mara in August and, in a good year, delivers better photography and an emptier park. Mauritius in February is cyclone season. Europe in August is expensive and crowded, and Europe in November is neither.
There is a calendar view further down this page that maps the year across all destinations at once. For the detail on any single place, the destination guide covers it month by month.
Kenya: Domestic Destinations
Fourteen destinations within our own borders, most reachable from Nairobi in under a day. Domestic travel is where we do our highest volume of leisure work, and where the value gap between what people pay and what they could pay is widest, because so much of it is booked reactively.
The Safari Circuit
Masai Mara
One of Kenya's best-known wildlife destinations. Seasonal wildlife movements and road or flight timings vary; check the detailed guide and current operator schedule when planning.
Amboseli National Park
Known for elephant viewing and views towards Kilimanjaro when conditions permit. Access time and conditions vary by routing and season.
Tsavo East and Tsavo West
Kenya's largest protected area and its most underrated. Red elephants, Mzima Springs, and enough space that you can drive for an hour without seeing another vehicle. The natural safari stop for anyone travelling between Nairobi and the coast.
Samburu National Reserve
Northern Kenya, semi-arid, and home to the Special Five you will not see in the Mara: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. For travellers who have already done a classic safari and want something that looks different.
Meru National Park
Elsa's park, from Born Free, and still one of the quietest places in Kenya to see wildlife well. Rivers, doum palms and a genuine sense of remoteness five hours from Nairobi.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Rhino sanctuary, Rothschild's giraffe, and flamingos when the water levels cooperate. We are direct about the flamingos on the destination page, because water levels have made them unreliable in recent years and we would rather set the expectation than sell the postcard.

The Coast
Diani Beach
Kenya's best beach, and the one we send the most people to. White sand, a genuine reef, and an accommodation range that runs from backpacker to properly luxurious. One hour by air to Ukunda, or the SGR to Mombasa and a road transfer.
Mombasa
More than a gateway. Old Town, Fort Jesus, the Swahili food culture, and the north and south coast beaches on either side. The city rewards two days of actual attention before you head for a beach.
Malindi and Watamu
Watamu's marine park is the best snorkelling and diving on the Kenyan coast, and Malindi carries an Italian influence that shows up in the food. Quieter than Diani, and better for anyone whose priority is what is under the water.
Lamu Island
A UNESCO World Heritage site with no cars, dhows instead of taxis, and a pace that resets people within about a day. Not for everyone, and we will tell you honestly if we think it is not for you. For the right traveller there is nowhere else like it.

Rift Valley, Mountains and City
Lake Naivasha
A popular Rift Valley escape with boat trips and access to nearby outdoor activities. Journey times depend on traffic and route conditions.
Mount Kenya
Africa's second-highest peak. Point Lenana is a trek and reachable by a fit, well-acclimatised walker; Nelion and Batian are technical climbs. Also a destination for people with no interest in summiting, given what sits on the mountain's lower slopes.
Nanyuki and Laikipia
The conservancy country north of the mountain, and the most interesting conservation story in Kenya right now. Ol Pejeta, Lewa, Borana, Segera. We have an office in Nanyuki, which means our knowledge of this region is not researched: it is local.
Nairobi City Tours and Day Trips
For visitors with a spare day, and for Nairobi residents who have never actually done the giraffe centre. Nairobi National Park, the elephant orphanage, Karen Blixen, Kazuri Beads, and the Bomas.
Africa and the Indian Ocean
The destinations closest to home, and the ones where the Kenyan passport travels most easily.
Zanzibar
Stone Town for history and north and east coasts for beach stays. Confirm entry requirements and current flight schedules with official authorities and carriers before booking.
Rwanda
Kigali city breaks and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Confirm entry requirements and current flight schedules with official authorities and carriers before booking.
Egypt
Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Luxor and Nile cruises. Confirm entry requirements and current flight schedules with official authorities and carriers before booking.
South Africa
Cape Town, the Garden Route, the Winelands and Kruger. Confirm entry requirements and current flight schedules with official authorities and carriers before booking.
Victoria Falls
Zimbabwe and Zambia either side of the Zambezi. Best combined with a Botswana or South Africa leg rather than travelled to on its own. The falls are at their most dramatic between March and May.
Seychelles
Mahe, Praslin and La Digue. Confirm entry requirements and current flight schedules with official authorities and carriers before booking.
Mauritius
Reef-protected lagoons, cultural experiences and family-oriented resorts. Confirm entry requirements and current flight schedules with official authorities and carriers before booking.
Maldives
No direct service from Nairobi; the practical routings run through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Colombo. Nine to thirteen hours total. Time your arrival before 15:00 Male time or the seaplane will not fly and you will overnight in the capital.
Indian Ocean Islands Hub
If you know you want an island but not which one, start here. Side-by-side comparison of costs, flight times, visas, seasons and traveller fit across all six island destinations, plus Madagascar.

Middle East, Asia and Europe
The long-haul book, where routing and visa lead time do more to shape the trip than anything else.
Dubai and the UAE
Five hours direct, with more daily frequency out of Nairobi than any other long-haul destination. Works as a four-day city break, a family holiday, a shopping trip in the January and July sale windows, or a stopover on the way to Asia.
India
Six hours to Mumbai. The Golden Triangle, Kerala, Goa and Rajasthan. E-visa for Kenyan passport holders. India is also where a significant share of our medical travel enquiries go, and we handle those differently: quietly, and with the hospital coordination built in.
Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang and Borneo. The best value-for-money long-haul destination we sell, by a clear margin. Twelve hours or so with one connection.
Bali and Indonesia
The longest flight in this list and the one people are most consistently glad they took. Visa on arrival, and a cost of living once you land that offsets a good part of the airfare.
Sri Lanka
Leopards at Yala, tea country, ancient cities and south-coast beaches. Confirm entry requirements with Sri Lanka's official immigration authorities before booking.
Singapore
Usually a stopover, occasionally a destination in its own right, and outstanding with children. Pairs naturally with Malaysia or Bali on the same routing.
Europe
Ten countries covered in one comprehensive guide: the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal. Heavy detail on the Schengen visa process for Kenyan passport holders, which is the single biggest obstacle between a Kenyan traveller and a European holiday.

Thirty Destinations Is Too Many to Compare Alone.
Our consultants do this every working day. Send us three you are weighing up and we will tell you which one fits your dates, your budget and the people travelling with you, including when the answer is none of them.
Flight Times and Visa Position at a Glance
Routes, schedules, connection times and entry rules change frequently. Before booking, check the destination country's official immigration or embassy guidance and the operating carrier's current timetable. Our visa team can help you identify the official source for your Kenyan passport and circumstances; it does not replace the destination authority's decision.
Choosing by Traveller Type
Seychelles, Mauritius, Maldives and Zanzibar carry the classic appeal, but the combination that consistently produces the best feedback is a short Kenyan safari followed by a beach week. Three nights in the Mara then seven in Diani or Zanzibar gives you two entirely different holidays for barely more than one. Our honeymoon packages team builds these routinely.
Mauritius, Amboseli, Diani, Dubai and Singapore. Short flights, reef-protected water or open flat parks with reliable sightings, and properties that genuinely want children rather than merely tolerating them. Our family safari and family travel page covers the age-specific detail, including the honest guidance on when a child is too young for a particular park.
Amboseli or the Masai Mara. Both are open, both deliver, and neither requires you to have done this before. Start with the Kenya safari tours hub if you are choosing between parks.
Laikipia, the Mara conservancies, Seychelles and the Maldives sit at the top of what we sell. Our luxury travel page covers current properties, including the significant camp openings across 2025 and 2026.
Zanzibar, Kigali, Naivasha, Nanyuki, Amboseli, the Mara. Nothing requiring a connection.
Two extra days on the end of a Dubai, Johannesburg or London trip is the cheapest holiday available to anyone, because the flight is already paid for. Our bleisure travel page covers how to structure it without breaching your company's travel policy.
Anything above about eight people changes the economics entirely, usually in your favour. See group travel.
When to Go: A Calendar View Across All Destinations
January to February
Peak season in Kenya's parks and dry, with excellent game viewing. Cyclone risk in Mauritius and Madagascar. Good for Dubai and Egypt, both at their most comfortable. Southern hemisphere summer in South Africa.
March to May
Kenya's long rains. Rates in the parks fall dramatically and the game viewing is far better than the reputation suggests. Victoria Falls at maximum flow. Europe entering shoulder season, which is the best value window of the year for it.
June
The dry season returns to Kenya. Rates begin climbing. Excellent everywhere in East Africa and increasingly good in Europe before the crowds arrive.
July to October
Kenya's peak. The Migration is in the Mara for most of it, book six to nine months out. Europe at its most crowded and expensive in August. Indian Ocean islands in their dry, cooler season, which is the best time to visit them.
November
Short rains in Kenya. Quiet, cheap and good for birding. The best month of the year for value in Europe.
December
The Kenyan festive peak. Domestic and coastal rates go to their annual maximum and the coast fills. Book by September or accept what is left. Excellent conditions in South Africa, Mauritius entering its wet season.

Why Plan Through Travelshoppe
We were incorporated on 11 May 1994 and have been arranging travel out of Nairobi ever since. In that time we have served more than 10,000 travellers and we manage travel programmes for over 300 corporate clients.
We are IATA-accredited, which means we issue tickets on our own authority rather than reselling somebody else's. When a schedule collapses at midnight, we can reissue and reroute directly instead of telling you to call the airline. Our emergency line on +254 700 372 398 runs twenty-four hours and is answered by a consultant.
We are the exclusive Kenyan partner in the GlobalStar Travel Management network: 80-plus countries, 2,500-plus locations. Practically, that means a traveller in difficulty in Lisbon or Kuala Lumpur has a local office to walk into, not just a Nairobi number to ring at an awkward hour.
We hold membership of KATA, KATO, KTF and ATTA, and we are a subsidiary of the Ramco Group of Companies. Our consultants have personally inspected a large proportion of the properties we recommend, and our destination guides say plainly when they have not.
We accept M-Pesa, bank transfer and card, and we quote in both shillings and dollars so you can see what you are actually committing to.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which destination is cheapest to travel to from Kenya?
Cost and availability vary substantially by date, routing, property and traveller eligibility. Ask for current options rather than relying on a destination-wide "cheapest" claim.
How far ahead should I book?
It depends entirely on the visa. No-visa destinations can be booked weeks out. E-visa destinations want four to six weeks. Full embassy applications, including Schengen, UK, US and South Africa, need six weeks at an absolute minimum and often three to four months during peak periods, because appointment availability is the bottleneck rather than processing. For the Masai Mara in Migration season, or anywhere on the Kenyan coast over Christmas, book six to nine months ahead regardless of visa.
Can I combine a safari with a beach holiday?
This is the combination we build most often, and it is the one Kenya is uniquely positioned for. Three or four nights in the Mara or Amboseli followed by a week in Diani, Watamu or Zanzibar works logistically and costs less than two separate trips. The internal flights connect properly, and we handle the transfers so the safari camp hands you over to us and we hand you over at the beach hotel.
Which destinations do Kenyans not need a visa for?
Entry rules depend on passport, residence status, purpose and the destination's current requirements. Consult the destination's official immigration or embassy guidance; our visa team can help you identify the relevant official source.
Do you only handle international travel, or Kenyan destinations too?
Both, and domestic travel is a large part of what we do. Fourteen of the destinations on this page are inside Kenya. We also maintain an office in Nanyuki, which gives us direct local knowledge of Laikipia, Mount Kenya, Samburu and the northern circuit that agencies working solely out of Nairobi do not have.
Can I pay with M-Pesa?
Yes. We accept M-Pesa, bank transfer to our KCB, Equity or Co-operative accounts, and card payment. Corporate clients on account settle to agreed credit terms. For larger bookings a deposit secures the arrangement with the balance due before travel, and we set out the schedule in writing before you commit.
What happens if something goes wrong while I am travelling?
You call +254 700 372 398. It runs twenty-four hours and a consultant answers it. Because we are IATA-accredited, we can reissue tickets and reroute you directly. Because we are the Kenyan GlobalStar partner, there is a partner office in most countries you will travel to. This is the single largest practical difference between booking through us and booking through an online platform, and it is invisible right up until the moment it matters.
Do you arrange travel for groups and companies?
Yes, corporate travel is our largest single line of business, with over 300 corporate clients on our books. Our corporate travel management page covers programme management, policy compliance and reporting, and our group travel page covers leisure groups, school trips, church groups and family celebrations.
I know roughly when I want to travel but not where. Can you help?
That is a normal enquiry and one of the more enjoyable ones for our consultants. Give us your dates, an approximate budget and who is travelling, and we will come back with two or three destinations that genuinely fit, along with what each would actually cost. There is no charge for this and no obligation to book.
Every Travel Destination from Kenya on This Page, Arranged by One Team.
Flights, hotels, transfers, visas, insurance and the emergency line behind all of it. Thirty-two years, one point of contact, and no handing you off to somebody else when it matters.
